This month, volunteers from the Washington, DC office of KPMG descended on Camp William B. Snyder for a morning of service to celebrate the company’s 125th anniversary on August 2, 2022. The company offered more than 40 different volunteer opportunities that provided a chance for their team members to learn and grow before their celebratory party in the afternoon.
Almost 40 of their team members chose to volunteer at Camp Snyder where they helped stain the multiple wood decks at Caroll’s Cottage, cleared the landscape of invasive species in the communal area, and split logs for future campfires. All the volunteers met the spirit of the Scout Slogan to “Do a Good Turn Daily.”

NCAC Executive Board member, Eric Rasmussen, who is a partner at KPMG, explained that he continues to be involved with the NCAC because Scouting taught him and his boys a lot. Many of the volunteers also had a connection to scouting. Some have served as scout leaders, have children in scouting, and were scouts themselves. Among the group we found the Advancement Chair for Troop 652 and a cub scout mom, Jenny, from Pack 146. One current Scout, Luke, accompanied his father for the day of service after spending the summer on staff at Goshen Scout Reservation.
We appreciate KPMG’s efforts toward improving Camp Snyder and know that their effort contributed to our ability to provide a quality program that encourages a lifetime of service to others, while building self-
confidence and developing leadership skills for over 35,000 youth across the National Capital region.

Bring your partial merit badge records and finish up your merit badges from the summer with the Goshen camp staff. We will have counselors from a selection of merit badges. The list of available badges is included on the Family Camp program schedule. Other badges not on the list may be requested based on the availability of counselors. Scouts wanting to make up badges should request them as part of their registration.
Goshen’s Labor Day Family Camp, September 2-5, is open to all scouting families and has activities for all ages. The program format is open program. During the hours of program, you and your family can show up to any of the program areas and take part in the unstructured activities – whether that be boating around the lake or testing your skill in archery. There are also opportunities to go on hikes to two of Goshen’s most popular spots – the Swimming Hole at the river and Viewing Rock with a magnificent view of the lake.
Scout creativity was on full display in Michael’s Woodshop during Camp William B. Snyder’s second annual Scout Specialty Week. Among the wide variety of merit badge offerings, Michael’s Woodshop offered the Woodwork Merit Badge, a challenging merit badge requiring extended sessions throughout the week. Scouts learned about lumber, shop safety, first aid and tool sharpening. To demonstrate the use of different tools, cuts and joints, Scouts created three projects including a toolbox, a wooden mallet and a cell phone stand. The real fun began when they designed and built their own projects. The results were amazing!
The classes during the merit badge week were led by a group of highly skilled woodshop volunteers. It was a very successful week with 15 Woodwork Merit Badges earned! To see more of the fun activities during the week, go to the

Normally in Michael’s Woodshop, we use the expression “like kids in a candy store” to describe either our shop volunteers (who just love to be in the shop) or parents who are visiting the shop for the first time and find themselves admiring the well-organized array of tools and great workspace. However, this summer we also used the phrase to describe the Cub Scouts who attended Day Camp and Resident Weekends at Camp Snyder. During their stay, they had the chance to visit Michael’s Woodshop and create their very own candy dispenser. It was a great hands-on project and over the course of the summer the Cub Scouts made 564 candy dispensers!!!

The process started with a safety briefing and some brief assembly instructions and then the fun began! Cub Scouts were guided by camp staff and volunteers in drilling, gluing and nailing together their dispensers. After the assembly process was completed, Cub Scouts sanded all the corners and edges and were then given the opportunity to stamp their project with the official “Handcrafted in Michael’s Woodshop” brand. It was great fun and the activity in Michael’s Woodshop was rated as one of the youth favorites. To see more great photos from summer camp, please link to our
