Announcing Ladies Nights in the Woodshop

June 30, 2021 by Dave Schneeman

Michael’s Woodshop at Camp Snyder has become a very popular venue, hosting fun, hands-on activities for Scouts of all ages. As female youth membership in the National Capital Area Council continues to grow, we are hosting more and more female youth for activities ranging from Pinewood Derby Days to Eagle Scout Projects. As a result, we would like to add female adult and youth volunteers to our Team. The feeling of satisfaction derived from completing a project or coaching youth as they complete their own is difficult to describe. Rather than trying to convey this feeling with mere words, we decided to invite potential volunteers out to the shop to experience it first-hand!

While experienced woodworkers would be ideal, we have volunteer opportunities available for a variety of skill levels and ages, including our Youth Shop Assistant Program for BSA registered youth who are 14 and older. Volunteers are expected to be role models for visiting youth and adults. They should enjoy coaching and guiding youth during activities and a focus on safety is a must. All adult and youth volunteers must be (or become) BSA registered.

We have planned a variety of project sessions including bird houses, a cheese board and a sure to be favorite “Mom’s Tool Box”. These projects will be hands-on, sawdust-making sessions with participants having the opportunity to use a number of shop tools. The sessions are open to female adults and youth 14 and older. Time will be allotted during the activity for a shop tour as well as sharing information and answering questions about our programs and volunteer opportunities. A series of events will be held over the coming months. Please visit the Registration Page for the schedule and additional information about the projects. There is no registration fee for these events and materials will be provided free of cost. However, space is limited so make your reservation soon.

If you are interested in volunteering, we hope you will be able to join us for one of these events. If you are unable to attend a session but are interested in learning more, please visit the Volunteering Page on the website or email us at MichaelsWoodshop.CWBS@gmail.com.

June 5 Trail Walk to Engage Scouts in Ecology, Conservation

May 28, 2021 by Dan Kurtenbach

“Preserving nature and protecting wildlife has been central to Scouting’s mission since its founding.”
– Will Rodger, Chair of the NCAC Conservation Committee

Like something from Narnia or Middle-earth, the stone arch on the edge of the forest invites you to enter a magical place. Follow the grassy trail beyond the arch, and you’ll find that the animals, birds, trees, fish, reeds, and water do speak to us: They tell us about the health of the land, and the cleanliness of the water, and the amount of food available in their habitats, and about the air and the climate.

This is a rare and special place. As Scouts in the National Capital Area Council, it is ours to care for. This is the Hylton Ecological Preserve at Camp Snyder. It is 125 acres of forest, open water, streams and ponds that come and go, fields where trees are beginning to take over, and a wide variety of wildlife and plant life. Its technical name is the North Fork Wetlands Bank, and it was built by people on what was a farm field so there would be a safe place for plants and animals to live and for water to be collected and stored.

On June 5, 2021, Scouts of all ages, leaders, parents, siblings, and friends are invited to Scouting on Foot: Camp Snyder’s Wetlands. Talk to naturalists about invasive species and protecting native plants and animals. Learn about the birds that live there and how water is filtered by the plants and soil. Find out what Nature is telling us, and how you can help.

Summer Camp is Fundamental for Troop 248 — And Should be for Your Unit

May 27, 2021 by Craig Burkhardt

As Scouting units across our Council are determining what their young people will experience this summer, most will return their Cubs, Scouts and Venturers to the joys of a full week of adventure at a BSA camp. After a year of COVID-caused physical isolation from their friends, our young people in Troop 248 are delighting with the anticipation of returning for a week of experiencing the mysteries of camp friendships – many for the first time. Our Troop members live and meet in the urban core of our great capital city, so traveling to our splendid Goshen Scout Reservation for a week of aquatics, Scoutcraft, nature, shooting sports, hiking and the silly pleasures of campfire entertainment takes on heightened importance.

This year we are sending 32 Scouts and eight adults to Camp Olmsted and later in the summer, 15 more–advanced Scouts and adults to the high adventure backpacking program known as Lenhok’sin. Those of us who attended as Scouts or served as staff at camps of our youth know the facts: we own one of the Nation’s finest camp properties operated at the highest possible level of program excellence. Our Troop Committee and Scoutmaster Staff believe it is a central duty to make these summer experiences available. Our Scouts, including several who are experiencing the gift of a Council campership, are grateful to anyone who has helped make the pleasures of Goshen Scout Reservation possible. That would include all of you who support our Council through contributions or bringing your own units to camp.

We are a new unit – just 28 months old. We are now a strong group of 50 Scouts and 27 adults for having centered our efforts for 15 months on successfully overcoming the impacts of COVID on the life experiences of our Scouts. We largely achieved this by continuing our live meetings and monthly weekend events outside in the sun, rain and cold (with appropriate precautions). In just six weeks, the young people of Troop 248 will exchange any remaining trepidations from pandemic fear for the confidence and joy that a week in the woods will bring. Decades from now, they will look back on the experiences we will provide them through our camp and know Scouting provided just what was needed at the precise time.

For those of you who excluded live outdoor activities from your unit’s program, I strongly urge you to add a week of summer camp to your agenda. Your unit can still do it now and your Council will happily provide the advice, flexibility and direct staffing assistance to make this happen for your youth members. This is your time to renew the spirit and purpose of your Scouting unit. This is your time to provide your children the relief and renewal they need. This is our collective time as believers in Scouting to rise to this challenge.

All we really need to do right now is simply get back to camp. I’ll be looking for you. Camp Olmsted. First period. The guy wearing the smoky-the-bear hat.
