NYLT Summer Registration Opens Saturday March 5th @ 10AM

Scouts ready to attend National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) are encouraged to sign up early. Recent courses have filled quickly. Registering as soon as the site opens could ensure a slot on the course of your choice.

WHAT IS NYLT?
National Youth Leadership Training is an exciting 6-day program designed for youth to learn leadership skills that will help them succeed in Scouting and in life!

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
Scouts who have completed their unit’s introduction to leadership course, have been practicing these skills, and are ready for the next level of training should attend NYLT once they meet all Eligibility Requirements.

FAQ
Q. How quickly will slots fill?
A. While we are never sure, last summer’s courses filled very quickly and Winter course filled in a matter of hours. We have increased the number of participant slots to try and give as many Scouts the opportunity to attend NYLT as possible. We strongly recommend registering early to lock in your slot.

Q. What will your masking, distancing and other covid policies be this summer?
A. We will follow the covid protocols NCAC has in place for Council programs.

Meet 2022 NOESA Honoree Aaron Burciaga

Aaron Burciaga is a renowned Data Scientist, AI Engineer, Author, and Advisor. As a seasoned technology and business leader in both startup and enterprise settings, he has focused his career on delivering efficiency and value through automation, data science, machine learning, Artificial Intelligence, blockchain, quantum computing, and emerging concepts and innovative technologies. His development and implementation of programs and initiatives have enhanced multi-billion dollar programs and operational efficiencies across industries in commercial, federal, and defense.

Aaron’s roles have included Senior Practice Manager for Artificial Intelligence System Integration at Amazon Web Services (AWS), Vice President Data & Artificial Intelligence at ECS Technology, Global Operation Director Analytics & Artificial Intelligence at HCL Technologies, CTO at Analytics2Go, Vice President Data Science & AI at Booz Allen Hamilton, Global Analytics Platform Lead at Accenture, and Senior Research Scientist at Elder Research.

Before turning his attention to commercial and public sectors, Aaron was a Marine Corps officer and Iraq war veteran and was the head operations research analyst and director of an operations analysis activity at the Pentagon, supporting the Marine Corps Headquarters. He is also a Marine Reservist, where he supports the Chief Information Officer at Headquarters Marine Corps-Pentagon as Lead Data Technologist.

Aaron is a Forbes contributor, frequently invited keynote and speaker, and Certified Analytics Professional (CAP). He is an appointed member of the U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Technology Information Service advisory board. Aaron received his M.S. Operations Research from the Naval Postgraduate School and his B.S. from the US Naval Academy.

Get Wilderness First Aid Certified with NCAC

The Outdoor Preparedness Initiative (OPI) offers Wilderness First Aid certification with CPR/AED. OPI aims to prepare Scouts, Scouters, and outdoor enthusiasts for high adventure activities and other outdoor adventures. Certification is provided through the American Red Cross. Courses are being offered at Camp Snyder in Haymarket, VA on the weekends of November 20-21 and December 18-19.

When attending national and local high adventure bases, at least one member of the crew needs to be certified in Wilderness First Aid. Please check out the information for the high adventure base you are attending to learn more about their specific requirements.

Camp Snyder Campmasters – Join the Team!

Calling all friends of Camp Snyder! Have you been out to Camp Snyder and met our amazing Camp Ranger, Ryan? Did you know that there is a group of volunteers who help Ryan take care of the camp each weekend? That group is the Camp Snyder Campmaster Corps.

Each weekend, one member of the corps comes out and works checking in and checking out visitors, watching over the camp, and making sure that the visitors are having a good visit while on the camp property. The corps covers every weekend from September 1 through the first weekend of June. As you can imagine we need a strong group who are willing to commit to coming out a couple weekends each year to help with coverage. We are reaching out to the Scouting community to extend an invitation to join the corps.

We will be holding an information/training session on Saturday, December 11th from 1pm – 2pm in the Dining Hall at Camp Snyder. The session will cover the expectations of a Campmaster, what a weekend typically looks like, and customer service. If you are interested in learning more about the program and/or joining, please come out on the 11th!

Sea Scouts Safety @ Sea 2021

It is called “the best kept secret of the BSA” and it is Sea Scouts BSA.

On Saturday, September 11, 2021, Life Scout Austin, an ASPL from Troop 447, visited the “Safety @ Sea 2021” event by the Coast Guard Auxiliary at the U.S. Coast Guard Yard in Baltimore, MD. Ever since Austin had seen a small sailboat at Camp William B. Snyder as a Cub Scout, he wanted to join the Sea Scouts, but he had to wait until he had reached the age of 14. The event is sponsored jointly by the United States Coast Guard Sector Maryland-National Capital Region, United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, FOSSOM Inc. (Friends of Sea Scouts of Maryland), and Sea Scouts BSA.

Since Sea Scouts BSA were sponsors, Scouts were allowed to participate in the 2021 Safety @ Sea event. This annual event gives Scouts and Scouters a close look at the many facets of Maritime safety in sailing, motor boating, paddle crafts, etc. It also introduces the Scouts to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and membership in the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, the all-volunteer branch of the Coast Guard.

For Scouters it was an excellent opportunity to brush up their skills or to network with the many Units, NST-12 and National representatives, like NST-12 Commodore Stanley Kwok.
Among the most popular activities at the event were the Helicopter rescue demonstration and the “man overboard” drill and of course the live flares station.

Sea Scouts is the official maritime program of the BSA for male and female youth from 14 to 20 years. Sea Scouts BSA has 4 different ranks: Apprentice, Ordinary, Able and Quartermaster. Last year only 36 Sea Scouts achieved the highest rank of Quartermaster nationwide.

To get a valuable introduction in leadership skills for adults, Scouters of both Sea Scouts BSA and from Scouts BSA should consider the Seabadge training offered throughout the year. Check out the next opportunity at seascout.org/adult-training/seabadge/ .

Michael’s Woodshop Ventures Into New Territory

On October 1, Christina A. of Crew 893 hosted the first Summit Award Project in Michael’s Woodshop, making a set of knot boards for a local Girl Scout Troop. With plenty of bench space, there was ample room to create work stations for drilling, laminating description cards, cutting & binding cords and assembling the knot boards. With good planning and organization and support from fellow crew members, family and friends, Christina was able to successfully complete the knot boards over the course of a busy evening in the shop. Congratulations and job well done!

Michael’s Woodshop may be reserved for use by NCAC youth or Units and it is an exceptional venue for hosting Summit Award Projects, Eagle Scout Projects and other large or complex group projects. The shop is well-outfitted with the tools and work space to create just about any woodworking project. The shop is operated by a team of experienced volunteers who can answer question and provide assistance as you plan your work. A volunteer will also be on hand to provide instruction and supervision throughout your activity.

 

Michael’s Woodshop operates year-round and is a great place for Scouts to create and learn. In addition to working on large projects, the shop may also be reserved for many other Unit activities such as our Baloo the Builder and Webelos Build It workshops and our upcoming Pinewood Derby Days sessions.
