Pack 835 Den 7 Does Homecamping 2020

July 23, 2020 by Kelly Carniol

When Webelos Resident Camp was cancelled due to the COVID-19 novel coronavirus, Pack 835 Den 7 had some very disappointed newly-minted Webelos. Then NCAC and Goshen Scout Reservation announced Homecamping 2020. The Den leaders knew this would be a great opportunity for all of our Cub Scouts to keep them engaged and learning over the summer. Soon, a plan was hatched to host the 5 boys in a single location with both Den leaders present.
We knew the 5 families involved were taking precautions and social distancing as we discussed our options with each family. The Assistant Den Leader’s home was chosen. We cleaned out a room and turned it into Webelos Central! With a bathroom on the main floor and a kiddie pool in the backyard, we were all set! Each Webelos brought their own lunch, snacks, and water bottle for the day. Different families donated disinfecting wipes, hand sanitizer, and Lysol spray to help keep the meeting place clean and safe … not only for the Webelos, but for the hosting family as well.

Each family registered their Webelos for the Homecamping 2020 sessions. On July 6th, we welcomed each Webelos to Homecamping with a camp shirt designed by one of the moms and their own bucket to keep their camp supplies. In accordance with NCAC guidance, the Den leaders took everyone’s temperature before entering the home and each Scout washed their hands. Each parent was asked the NCAC guidance questions and provided emergency information for their Scout.

At the beginning of each day, the Webelos recited the Scout Oath, Scout Law and the Pledge of Allegiance. Then, it was time for the fun to begin. With the Webelos gathered around the table, they watched and participated in each session on both a computer and iPad. Once the online sessions were completed, the Den leaders worked with the Scouts to answer any questions or sent them outside to get out some energy before the next session.

During lunch breaks, the Webelos ate lunch outside, hiked around the local trails and neighborhoods, swam in the kiddie pool, and planned campout meals.

Over the course of a single week, these Webelos earned their first 3 pins and completed requirements towards several more! They even helped their families by preparing dinner and dessert! They had a great time, were exhausted at the end of day, and stunk … just as if they had been at Resident Camp!

I think one of the Webelos said it best when his mom said “You know you’re going to see them again, right?” and he replied “I know mom, but it’s not the same on Zoom.”

Cub Scout Pack 22 “International Scouts Trash the Trash” Day

July 21, 2020 by Wendy Latella

Scouts of Cub Scout pack 22 along with their leaders and parents participated in a trash pickup day at Lee Hill Park on July 11th. It is important to do this because it helps the environment stay healthy and clean. It also keeps the animals safe from eating things that can make them sick. The scouts picked up 6 large trash bags of trash from the park. This also helps the scouts show 2 of the meanings of the scout law by being clean and helpful.

Cub Scouts Investigate Electronics in STEM@Home!

July 14, 2020 by NCAC STEM

On Saturday, June 27, NCAC held its’ 4th STEM@Home Nova event! Nova Counselor, Dr. Jason Kralj of Potomac District ran a ZOOM class for 20 Cub Scouts to earn the Nova Award: Swing!

Scouts completed a few requirements on their own (such as watching physics-related videos for requirement 1 and submitted their assignments for Dr. Kralj to review in Google Classroom).

However, we did most of the requirements together during the ZOOM class. A very fun activity was requirement 2A: With parental permission, Cubs took an old or broken mechanical item and broke it down into its component pieces!  We investigated some cool items in our class; cubs took apart alarm clocks, scooters, CD players, hard drives, and even washing machine components! Can you tell what is what?!

The class was lots of fun and almost all of the cubs completed their Nova Awards!

Want to join the next STEM@Home event? Dr. Kralj is teaching Down & Dirty this Saturday, July 18 and you can sign up here: https://scoutingevent.com/082-STEMatHome

This upcoming event will have a cool twist to it too:

    • From 1-1:30PM, this session will include an interaction with WD Lab Grown Diamonds, which uses patented Chemical Vapor Disposition to create diamonds for the gemstone market as well as for medical and scientific fields!
    • From 1:30 – 3PM, cubs in the Down & Dirty Class will continue their activities and requirements with Nova Counselor Dr. Kralj

Sign up and join us!

Engine-nuity in Powhatan Virtual Pinewood Derby

July 13, 2020 by David Hollender

With the wave of a virtual checkered flag, Powhatan’s Pinewood Derby features great looking cars and suspenseful finishes – with first and second-place finishers just hundredths of a second apart!

Several dozen Cub Scouts from across Powhatan delivered their hand-crafted cars to the district’s state of the art racing facility – and home of Racemaster/Scouter C.J. Takacs. C.J. and his dedicated one-person Scout-led pit crew, setup races for all participating Lions, Tigers, Wolves, Bears, Weebs and Arrow of Light Scouts.

Using split-screen technology, viewers were treated to a great virtual Pinewood Derby experience, and the first in Powhatan’s history. With views of the starting gate, mid-track and finish-line, every Powhatan parent, Cub Scout, family member and friend had great seats for every race.

Who won? To find out, check out the event on YouTube. Watch all the races, or just a few! Be sure not to miss the virtual Concours D’Elegance – highlighting the designs and artistic skill of Powhatan Cubs – at the end of the video.
