Join National Capital Area Council on Day of Giving

May 10, 2021 by The Scouter Digest Staff

Bethesda, MD — The National Capital Area Council (NCAC) asks everyone to help kick off our #SummerofService on NCAC Day of Giving —Thursday, June 10.

National Capital Area Council is in the business of making our communities stronger by serving more than 36,000 families and helping instill in our young people the values of the Scout Oath and the Scout Law. As a non-profit organization, we rely on the generosity of our donors to ensure we can deliver on our promise to make the DC Metro region a better place. That is why we are kicking off NCAC’s Summer of Service with a Giving Day on June 10th.

“On NCAC Day of Giving, we hope to ignite a spark that will encourage people to give more, whether it be their time or resources, to help make a profound effect on the youth in the DC metro area.” said Craig Poland, Scout Executive of NCAC. “By contributing to Scouting, more youth will experience a program that will further instill values and character in their moral fiber.”

For over 100 years, Scouting families have answered the call to work together in service of the greater good. From public health drives to caring for the environment to assisting neighbors in need. Scouts have always been a force for positivity and goodness in our communities. It is what we do. It is part of our DNA. We serve others. Now more than ever, our world needs that Scouting spirit once again.

As part of Summer of Service, a national effort, we’re also asking Scouting families to give back to their communities this summer through acts of service. Scouts will serve in a variety of ways as defined by the individual. The spectrum will range from large city-wide projects to small random acts of kindness. Although any type of service is applicable, there will be 4 key areas of focus: The Environment, Health & Wellness, Our Communities, and Neighbors In-Need.

Webelos Camp Update

May 7, 2021 by Aaron Chusid

The weather is getting warmer, the cicadas are getting louder, and we’re getting ready for an amazing summer of Outdoor Adventure at Goshen Scout Reservation!

As we approach the beginning of the camping season, however, we have had to make a difficult decision about this summer. After consultation with our Council’s VP of Outdoor Adventure and Camping Chairs, to ensure we can provide every Pack with an outstanding program, we have made the decision to combine our Webelos camps for this summer. That means all Webelos programs will be taking place at Camp Ross. If your Pack has already registered to attend Camp PMI for weeks 2-5 this means you will be moved to the same week at Camp Ross. Some Packs registered for week 1 may be asked to switch to an alternate week; we are offering these Packs a 20% discount for their inconvenience.

This was not a decision we made lightly. We considered many factors, including the following:

  • Combining the camps allows us to consolidate resources, ensuring we can run all program areas effectively.
  • We selected Ross because it has had more recent facility upgrades and will help make general logistics more efficient.
  • Consolidating the Webelos programs into one camp ensures all key staff positions are filled. Other PMI staff will help fill openings in our other summer programs.

Packs should not have to take additional action at this time; we will simply switch their registration in the system. They will still attend camp in the same week and enjoy the same high-quality program, staff, and food service as they have come to expect at Camp PMI.

Please note that there will still be plenty of room for more Webelos at Camp Ross, so sign up today and be part of the adventure! For more information about Camp Ross please visit the website: www.gotogoshen.org/camp-ross.

See you all this summer!

Scouting For Food

May 3, 2021 by William (Toby) Tobias

Troop 7227, sponsored by Good Hope Country Day School on St. Croix, was unable again to conduct their bi-annual Scouting For Food event at the local supermarket due to covid restrictions, so the PLC came up with a plan to conduct a one-day food drive in a local community called Judith’s Fancy. The proceeds would be donated to The Lighthouse Mission, operated by Pastor Abe of Southgate Baptist Church, to feed the homeless in Christiansted.

The Malik John, Life Scout and SPL, obtained permission from the homeowners association to set up in a vacant lot on the main road of the development. The homeowners association helped by emailing a list of non-perishable items to their members that Lighthouse Mission needed. Working in two- hour shifts from 8am to 3pm, the Scouts collected over 500 pounds of food items and $581 in donations for Lighthouse Mission.
