Canoeing and Camping on the Shenandoah River

June 25, 2019 by Jill McClelland

Last month twenty-six scouts from Troop 58 in Ashburn, VA, went on an outdoor adventure – a canoeing campout! The troop went camping at the Low-Water Bridge Campground in Front Royal for two nights. On Saturday, the troop departed on a 12-mile canoe trip on the Shenandoah River outfitted by the Front Royal Canoe Company.

The troop recently welcomed twenty-one new Scouts who crossed over from the Webelos program. For this outing, more experienced Scouts were paired in canoes with younger Scouts to leverage their knowledge and let them spend time getting to know each other better. Along the way the troop stopped for brown bag lunches on the bank of the river, had water fights, and capsized two of the canoes!

The canoeing campout also helped Scouts meet requirements for the Canoeing Merit Badge and one of the requirements for the Camping Merit Badge by taking a non-motorized trip on the water of at least 5 miles. Troop 58 is also preparing for a Northern Tier High Adventure in July 2020. During the high adventure trip next summer, Troop 58 Scouts will use the canoeing skills they have developed to explore millions of acres of lakes, rivers, forests, and wetlands in Northern Minnesota, Northwest Ontario and Northeast Monitoba.

Pack 2019 Lions Say “I’ll Do It Myself”

January 24, 2019 by Priscilla Martínez

The girls’ and boys’ Lions Dens from Pack 2019 at the All Dulles Area Muslim Society in Sterling, VA, completed their “I’ll Do It Myself” adventure. They made and decorated bags to keep their Scout swag organized and on hand. Each Scout chose how they wanted to decorate and with their parent partners’ help used glue guns, foam letters, glitter glue, and a slew of other craft supplies to make their bags shine.

These two dens have already earned their Lion’s Honor, Animal Kingdom, and King of the Jungle adventure loops and are well on their way to earning their full Lion ranks! Pack 2019 has girls’ dens for Lions, Wolves, and Bears, and are welcoming more Scouts every day.

    Goose Creek District Campout

October 30, 2018 by The Scouter Digest Staff

Over 190 Webelos from 20 packs, with their parents, came out for a beautiful (if rainy)weekend at Camp Snyder. They exhausted themselves at the gaga pit, monkey bridge, human foosball, knife safety, cooking, wilderness survival, fire building, and first aid.

All of the activities were run by over 90 Scouts and Scouters from eight troops that came out to assist in the event. They had just a much fun showing the Cub Scouts about what Boy Scouts do and had a great opportunity to use the EDGE method in their teaching.

Topping it all off was an evening campfire, hosted by Goose Creek’s Order of the Arrow ceremony team. Packs and troops presented skits and songs for everyone to enjoy, and the staff performed their traditional “pie throwing techniques” skit to the amusement of all.

A special “Introduction to Webelos” presentation was provided to all of the first year Webelos and their parents while the Order of the Arrow did a ‘Webelos to Scout’ presentation for those that will be transitioning into Boy Scout this spring.

A special thanks to all the adult volunteers who came out to help set up, take down, pickup trash bags, distribute charcoal and fire pit stands, prepare foil strips, manage traffic, and run the food distribution area and to the troops who cut up the onions and peppers for the Webelos’s dinner and helped with the food line.

Eagle Scout to Receive 2018 Billy Michal Student Leadership Award

July 20, 2018 by The Scouter Digest Staff

Troop 761 Eagle Scout John Matter has been selected to represent Virginia to receive the 2018 Billy Michal Student Leadership Award from the National WWII Museum. Matter will travel to New Orleans to receive the award at the 2018 American Spirit Awards Gala on June 8th.

Matter was nominated by Boy Scout Troop 761 Committee Member, Kathleen Quinn, of Ashburn, Virginia. “I nominated John because of his selflessness to his troop and to his community,” Quinn said. “He is very deserving of this honorable award. John represents the values of leadership, teamwork, creativity and perseverance, and quietly demonstrates them in his daily life.”

The Billy Michal Student Leadership Award is given annually to one student from each state who demonstrates the American spirit in his or her community. The values of leadership, teamwork, tolerance, creativity and perseverance can and should be learned and lived by all Americans regardless of age.

During World War II, when six-year-old Billy Michal from Zimmerman, La., helped his one-room school win a statewide scrap-metal collection contest, he understood that every citizen – no matter their age – could contribute to victory in the war. Billy Michal’s example, and the actions of millions of other students on the Homefront during World War II, reminds all that service to country and community helps create active, engaged citizens.

An Eagle Scout, National Honor Society student and varsity athlete, Matter is honored as one of the top student leaders in his school, community and state. But it was his service to others that prompted his nomination. Matter co-captains a team each year in the annual Race for Hope in Washington, D.C. to raise money for brain cancer research, and in 2017, he organized Troop 761 Scouts for “Project Starfish” to collect clothing, household items and money to aid victims of Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria.

Stone Bridge High School Principal Matthew Wilburn said, “This is a tremendous honor for John. We are very proud to have him as a representative of Stone Bridge High School. He is definitely deserving of this recognition due to his dedication to Stone Bridge and our community. I have no doubt that when the National WWII Museum created the Billy Michal Student Leadership Award, they had someone like John in mind.”

Upon hearing the exciting news, Matter said, “I am very honored to receive this award on behalf of the state of Virginia. I have been fortunate to have the support of my Scout troop, my school, and my community. I’ve learned a life lesson that leadership is a team effort.”
