Cub Scout Pack 194 named her Scouter of the Year in 2015.  She earned her Wood Badge in 2017 and became an assistant Scoutmaster in Troop 2535.  She became the Chain Bridge District Vice-Chair of Membership in 2017 and received the District Award of Merit in 2018.  She enjoys helping at district events like the Cub Camporall, pinewood derby finals, and the Alonzo Stagg Hike.

Scouting For Food

May 3, 2021 by William (Toby) Tobias

Troop 7227, sponsored by Good Hope Country Day School on St. Croix, was unable again to conduct their bi-annual Scouting For Food event at the local supermarket due to covid restrictions, so the PLC came up with a plan to conduct a one-day food drive in a local community called Judith’s Fancy. The proceeds would be donated to The Lighthouse Mission, operated by Pastor Abe of Southgate Baptist Church, to feed the homeless in Christiansted.

The Malik John, Life Scout and SPL, obtained permission from the homeowners association to set up in a vacant lot on the main road of the development. The homeowners association helped by emailing a list of non-perishable items to their members that Lighthouse Mission needed. Working in two- hour shifts from 8am to 3pm, the Scouts collected over 500 pounds of food items and $581 in donations for Lighthouse Mission.

Troop 1577 Hosts a Video Game Campout

May 3, 2021 by Carla Brown

Usually our troop hosts a “Lock-in” in February where the Scouts spend a night at the church and play video games, eat pizza and socialize. This year we could not do it, so the Patrol Leaders’ Council decided to try to replicate this event outdoors.

We booked a campsite with electricity at Lake Fairfax Park. Scouts and our Scoutmaster built a stand to hold up a video screen. The stand was made from two buckets filled with 25 pounds of concrete with a PVC tube in the middle. Then you slide in a 2×4 which has hooks attached. You use guylines and tent stakes to spread the poles apart. The screen we purchased was from Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/Mdbebbron-150-inch-Projection-Screen/dp/B0878RVTKX/ref=sr_1_11). We had a projector already from our Court of Honor events. The Scouts played a Smash Brothers tournament with two players at a time while others watched.

During the video game tournament, Scouts made Dutch oven desserts.

This outing had the highest attendance of any outing in recent years other than our Lock-ins at the church. It was voted the top outing idea in our troop outings survey.

For more details about the screen set-up, email troop1577scoutmaster@gmail.com.

Earth Day is Every Day for Scouts

May 3, 2021 by Jeannie Lee

In honor of Earth Day 2021 and every day for Scouts, members of Scouts BSA Troop 1191G and 1191B, Mount Airy rendered community service by clearing trails of invasive plants and removing trash from the waterway on the trails at Gillis Falls, Salt Box area. Scouts focus on conservation projects throughout the year, often completing service for town and county governments as well as civic organizations. For the month of April, Troop 1191G is furthering their knowledge of the environment by focusing on requirements for the Sustainability Merit Badge, one of the two choices for the environmental focused required merit badge that Scouts must earn for the rank of Eagle. Conservation and environmental studies have been a long standing focus for the Boy Scouts of America since 1910. Among the interesting artifacts recovered during their conservation work were a turntable, computer, pool ball, and half of a metal drum. The most significant recoveries of the morning were 31 tires and 3 bicycles.

Scouts BSA Troop 1191G and 1191B are both chartered by the American Legion Goldstar Post 191, Mount Airy Maryland. Both meet on Monday evenings. If you have an interested youth between the ages of 11-17, please contact us at Troop1191info@gmail.com to come visit us at our Troop meetings or join us for one of our many adventures.

Meet 2021 Silver Beaver Recipient Mary Carson

April 29, 2021 by The Scouter Digest Staff

Mary has always enjoyed working with youth.  As a teenager, she volunteered for vacation bible school, worked with summer youth programs and taught Sunday school.

In 1989, Mary became a Peace Corps Volunteer in Kenya, East Africa as a secondary school teacher in the foothills of Mt. Kilimanjaro.  She later moved to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and worked at the local University and then moved to Senegal, West Africa.

In 2004, Mary returned to the United States and settled in Silver Spring, Maryland.  She gave birth to a third son and became active again in her local church.  When her oldest son could join Cub Scouts, she quickly found her passion of working with youth in an admired and respected character building organization.  She served as den leader for all three of her sons and soon became the Cubmaster for Pack 96 of The Peoples Community Baptist Church.

For several years, she served as popcorn kernel and volunteered for district day camp.  She also served as an assistant roundtable commissioner.  Mary stayed with her first love, the Cub Scout pack, even though her youngest had bridged over to Boy Scouts.  She has received many awards for working with her pack, her church, and the school.  She eventually joined her sons in Troop 96.  She enjoys working with youth and helping to develop their character through their faith and strong organizations.

You can watch Mary receive her Silver Beaver Award on Saturday, May 15th at 7:30pm by reserving your seat at the virtual Court of Honor !
