America250 in Action: Building Informed Citizens with Troop 1107 at the U.S. Capitol

Scouts from Troops 1107B and 1107G had the opportunity to see the government in action during a tour of the U.S. Capitol Building, facilitated by the staff of Rep. James Walkinshaw (VA-11) as part of the Citizenship in the Nation Merit Badge. The tour was held on April 21, as many scouts had the day off for the state’s special election.

Led by Scoutmaster and Merit Badge Counselor James Dreier, the scouts visited the Old Supreme Court Chamber, the Old Senate Chamber, the crypt and several other locations inside the Capitol Building.

Walkinshaw’s office presented the scouts with passes to the House of Representatives gallery to have the experience of watching a debate on bills as they unfolded on the floor of the lower chamber.

In all, more than two dozen scouts, scouters, and parents were able to take part in the tour.

Troop 1107 B and Troop 1107G are chartered by St. John’s Lutheran Church, 5952 Franconia Road, Alexandria, VA. In addition to the troops, the church also charters Pack 867, Crew 80 and is the meeting place for the Order of the Arrow – Accotink Bay Chapter.

Are your rising Webelos and AOL dens looking for a weeklong adventure? Camp Ross is Goshen Scout Reservation’s dedicated overnight camp. The theme this summer is Indiana Ross. Avoid traps, find clues, and fool villains in an adventurous week!

Scouts BSA

There are plenty of options for Scouts BSA – whether they have been in the Troop for a while or are going to be bridging in next spring. There are camps for both units and individuals.

Camps Bowman, Marriott, and Olmsted at Goshen Scout Reservation offer a variety of dining options, unique and favorite Merit Badges and activities, and exciting programs for new Scouts, older Scouts, and all the Scouts in between.

Finish out your summer with Camp Catoctin BSA’s expert Merit Badge counselors in mid-August.

Is your Scout not able to attend camp with their Troop? Are they looking for a second week? Check out our options for individual scouts! Goshen runs Provisional Camp each week and Camp Snyder has two different Scout Specialty Weeks with both overnight and day camp options.

Older Scouts, Venturers, & Sea Scouts

Need more adventure for older Scouts, Venturers, and Sea Scouts? Sign your unit up for a backpacking & adventure activity trek or a river canoe trek at Goshen’s Lenhok’sin High Adventure.

Individuals can find adventure with a High Adventure Base Trip to Philmont, Northern Tier, Sea Base, and Lenhok’sin High Adventure with a council contingent run by the NCAC High Adventure Committee.

Order of the Arrow members should also check out GOAT, the Goshen Order of the Arrow Trail Crew, involving cheerful service on trail maintenance and a classic Lenhok’sin backpacking and activity trek at a reduced rate.

Those ages 14 and up who just cannot get enough summer camp should submit an application to join Summer Camp staff! Interviews will begin in January for the Summer 2024 season.

George Mason University hosts Chemistry Labs for Scouts

On April 22, 2023, George Mason University’s Chemistry Club is opening their doors to Webelos/AOLs/Scouts BSA and STEM Scouts for guided chemistry workshops!

Scheduled events:

12:30 – 2pm | Session 1, Lab for grades 4-5
1:30 – 3pm | Session 2, Lab for grades 4-5
2:30 – 5pm | Session 3, Chemistry merit badge for grades 6&up

What to expect:

ScoutsBSA will be able to earn the Chemistry merit badge at the event. There is one pre/post-req but the workshop is otherwise structured to help scouts earn the remaining requirements.

Cub Scouts/STEM Scouts will be able to experience 3 hands-on experiments as well as gain experience in this real university Lab. GMU Chem Club will also demonstrate flame-burning magnesium!

Do you have to be a scout to attend? 

No! Please invite a friend. We just ask that all youth register for the age-appropriate session.

 

 

Past events

In fall 2022, the George Mason University Chemistry Club hosted 40 STEM Scouts/Cub Scouts for a remarkable Lab experience!

The GMU Chem Club dazzled our scouts with 3 hands-on experiments and demonstrations, including flame burning magnesium!

Thank you to David Lieu, former GMU Chem Club President (and current STEM Lab 314 Association Lab Manager) for connecting us to current GMU Chem Club Officers. Thank you to entire Chem Club for sharing your enthusiasm of chemistry, to the Chemistry Department for opening your doors to scouts, and to Professors Dr. Ward and Dr. Banerjee for your leadership to this event!
