Scouts Pursue Merit Badges Learning About Local Government

March 7, 2023 by Kathleen Quinn

A dozen Scouts from Troop 58 of Ashburn went wild with civic engagement when they attended a public meeting of the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors on February 15, 2023. The Scouts were courteous and obedient, of course, but the topic of the evening was a proposed ordinance to limit the private ownership of certain wild, exotic and venomous animals, such as kangaroos, baboons, and vipers in the county.

The Scouts ranging in age from 12 to 17, from Scout to Life rank, were each working on requirements for the Citizenship in the Community and/or Communication Merit Badges. Before the meeting began, Chair Phyllis Randall asked the Scouts to introduce the Troop to the Board, after which she and Broad Run Supervisor Sylvia Glass gave the Scouts a tour of the Boardroom, including the dais. Senior Patrol Leader Connor Q. was invited to test out the gavel.

The Scouts had the opportunity to read about the proposed ordinance before the meeting, including issues encountered by first responders and delivery workers with potentially dangerous animals at residents’ homes. A story was shared of a recent enforcement officer visit to a property had multiple alligators, a caiman, Gaboon vipers and an 11-foot king cobra snake, which was reported on social media to be allowed to roam freely on the property. They learned that no effective anti-venom is readily available in the county, presenting a serious risk in the event of a bite.

The Scouts listened intently as the County Animal Services staff presented the issue, and constituents voiced their opinions and concerns related to the proposed ordinance. Two Scouts rose to address the Board of Supervisors, sharing their thoughts on the issue and directly participating in the process of local policymaking.

Even before they are old enough to vote, these Scouts are learning the importance of being informed and active citizens.

NCAC Donates Popcorn to Military Families in Our Community

February 10, 2023 by Cynthia Griffiths

Today, our Council! Staff loaded up a truck with around 600 cases of popcorn and pretzels worth over $100,000 which was then transported and donated to support military families in our community. Each year our Scouts sell popcorn to learn the value of earning their own way, setting goals, and contributing to their activity budget. When making a purchase, supporters are given the option of making a Heroes and Helpers donation. We are pleased to be able to #supportourtroops in this special way!

Pack 1513 Innovates at the 2023 Pinewood Derby

February 3, 2023 by Ashante Corey-Bey

Den leaders and scouting family of Pack 1513 shared with NCAC their Pinewood Derby experience this year:

“We have a visually impaired scout this year, and we didn’t want his sight limitations to impact the excitement and engagement of the pinewood races. In an attempt to address this issue, our Den leaders presented an idea to attempt to add bells for sound at the finish line, hoping to accommodate his needs and to be part of the races.  The bells turned out not to be the most practical. Still, coordinators (Mike Seaton, Joe Cuda, and Tim Maloney) creatively built a stand with wind-chimes suspended after the finish line, allowing the scout and attendees to hear the different notes from the cars as they finished the race. He was able to follow his car’s performance without seeing the races”.

Simple innovations by our scouting family make scout activities accessible for all! Thank you for sharing Pack 1513!

NCAC Wishes Everyone a Happy Pinewood Derby Season!!!!

25th Anniversary Venturing Lock-In

January 13, 2023 by Patrick Brantley

The Venturing program is what many scouts do to have more adventurous activities while still staying true to the scouting principles that draw so many to scouting. This year, Venturing turns 25 years old! To celebrate, the Council Venturing Officers’ Association (CVOA), is hosting a lock-in at Sportrock Climbing Center in Alexandria, VA.

This will be an amazing opportunity with opportunities to rock climb, work on requirements for the mountaineering aspect of the Ranger award, hang out with some of the amazing scouts and Venturers in the council, and celebrate a milestone achievement for the Venturing community. This event is open to Venturers and non-Venturers. All that is required is that someone be of Venturing age (14 to 21 years old) and interested in doing some climbing.

The lock-in will be February 10-11, from 9 pm to 9 am. Sign-up can be completed using this link (https://forms.gle/9Xx3Bk9MckR85UYU7).

I look forward to seeing many of you there. Join us as we lead the adventure!
