A Second Aquia District Scouts BSA No-Contact Food Drive in August – Continuing to Serve Stafford Safely

September 18, 2020 by Mike Haas

As summer drew to a close, Aquia District Scouts BSA focused their efforts on helping Stafford Community residents by holding a second No Contact Food Drive on August 22, 2020, due to the planning and leadership of Aquia District Scouter Laura Curran. Scouts and their families suspended their preparations for the school year for a moment and instead did their Good Turn by collecting 4,353 pounds of food to help replenish the dwindling supplies of local Stafford County pantries.

Like the Scouts BSA food drive service project in May, the goal was to support local pantries and keep Scouts, their families, pantry volunteers and donors all safe by maintaining safe physical distancing. Scouts were asked to help in whatever way they deemed appropriate for their family’s circumstances. When Scouts answered the call, they spread the word of the event virtually, shared flyers with neighbors and donned masks to collect donations from doorsteps and driveways. Some Scout units worked with their neighborhood homeowners’ associations to share information and created neighborhood collections points. The drop off point for residents who heard about the drive was operated with safety of all at the forefront.

Stafford pantries were grateful for the donations, as the need to help those affected by the pandemic continues. The pantries are expecting a prolonged demand due to corona-virus related job loss and furloughs and still need support to continue their fight against food insecurity. Donations of food via food drives are the main source of non-perishables for these food pantries.

This coming November, Aquia District Scouts BSA will be conducting “Scouting For Food,” a national food drive Scout BSA campaign. For this event held annually in November, Scouts “Do a Good Turn” to help Stafford County and Dumfries food pantries stock their shelves, not just for the holidays, but for the months beyond.

This year’s Scouting For Food may look a little different with the added emphasis on the safety of all participants. However, Aquia District Scouts BSA will continue to do their part to meet the needs of Stafford County, their efforts perpetuated by them living the Scout Oath for service to others by “Helping Other People At All times.”

Troop 26 Kicks ILST into High Gear!

September 15, 2020 by Mike Haas

Lord Baden Powell, the founder of Scouting, said “The sport in Scouting is to find the good in every [Scout] and develop it.” To that end, Aquia District’s Troop 26 (“26 KICKS!”) held its semi-annual Introduction to Leadership for Troops (ILST) training on September 12, 2020. As you can see from the pictures, Scouts observed COVID-19 safety protocols and had fun with a purpose!

ILST introduces Scouts, from ages twelve to seventeen, to leadership skills required to effectively lead other Scouts – leadership skills that can easily be applied to all aspects of their lives including school, sports, their religious communities and other activities outside of Scouting. ILST is the first of several formal leadership courses Scouts may attend throughout their Scouting careers.

The ILST curriculum is a diverse combination of lecture, open-ended dialogue, team-building exercises, video presentations, pizza and fun with a purpose! ILST focuses on Troop organization and the conduct of Scout activities using the Patrol Method – after all, Troops are meant to be Scout-led! As Baden-Powell said: “The best progress is made in those Troops where power and responsibility are really put into the hands of the Patrol Leaders.” And as B-P taught Scoutmasters: “Don’t do too much of what should be done by the [Scouts] themselves; see that they do it. ‘When you want a thing done don’t do it yourself’ is the right motto.”

ILST includes discussion and training on roles and responsibilities, vision, servant leadership, as well as leadership tools such as communication, planning and teaching. ILST also delves into the power of teamwork, including stages of team development, inclusion, and leadership ethics and values. The value that Scouts receive from their own Youth and Adult Leaders’ instruction and the open-ended dialogue is important to understanding that every Scout has value. A powerful lesson that, regardless of age or capabilities, diversity of thought and experiences actually make for a stronger Troop.

Team building exercises such as juggling balloons demonstrates the importance of delegation and role definition – no one can do it all themselves – not even the great Lord Baden Powell! Other team building activities such as flag plucking, adopt-a-rock and the telephone game (I know you all remember that one!) demonstrate stages of team development, embracing diversity and principles of communication. And of course, pizza and fun illustrate that leadership, although hard and serious work, should be fun too!

Developing leadership (and followership) in young and maturing Scouts is a critical element to achieving Scouting’s vision to prepare every eligible youth in America to become a responsible, participating citizen and leader who is guided by the Scout Oath and Law. Eleven Scouts from Troop 26 (“26 KICKS!”) are now poised to be stronger leaders not only in their Troop but also in their respective communities. We are proud to call them our leaders of tomorrow!

SCOUTING-ON! Troop 1889’s Landmark Event!

September 3, 2020 by Mike Haas

Despite this time of COVID-19 constraints, Troop 1889 Scouts and Scouters figured out a way to safely conduct its first in-person Troop event on August 24th – an outdoor Court of Honor! The Troop held their CoH safely in the picnic pavilion at Richland Baptist Church, Troop 1889’s Sponsoring Organization. As Baden-Powell, the Founder of Scouting said: “Don’t give up because you do not find everything you need made to order at your hand, but take what you have, use your wits and make the most of it.” And this is exactly what Troop 1889 Scouts did!

This picture captures a very “2020” Scouting event with all Scouts safely positioned along with Scoutmaster James Maxfield and Assistant Scoutmasters Amanda Howard and Jorge Roca.

The motivation to find a way to safely gather to celebrate Scouting accomplishments was very strong because, since the last time the Troop had been able to meet in-person, all of Troop 1889’s Scouts had advanced in rank! All six new Scouts (Bobby, Jake, Jackson, Alex, David, and Matthew) who had crossed over into the Troop in February earned their Scout ranks, three Scouts earned Second Class rank (Tyler, Benny, and James), and two Scouts completed all the requirements for becoming First Class Scouts (Daniel and Wesley).

Scouts Benny & James teamed up to be the CoH Emcees and the Scoutmaster, James Maxfield, and Senior Patrol Leader, Daniel, also presented Troop 1889’s Scouts with all the Merit Badges they had earned during on-line summer camps – another great example of finding ways to take advantage of other BSA learning opportunities during this challenging time.

Congratulations to a Troop of Scouts who exemplify Baden-Powell’s message on persevering: “When things look bad, just smile and sing to yourself, as the thrush sings: ‘Stick to it, stick to it, stick to it’, and you will come through all right. A very great step to success is to be able to stand disappointments.” There is no stopping cheerful and determined Scouts like these from Troop 1889 – SCOUT ON!
