Watch Michael’s Woodshop Come to Life!

January 15, 2021 by Dave Schneeman

If you have ever wondered about the power of volunteering and donations, we invite you to view this short series of slideshows that chronicle the creation of Michael’s Woodshop at Camp William B. Snyder.

Before: Storage Space, December 2017

The slideshows capture the development of underutilized storage space from bare steel walls to the incredible facility which exists today.  As you view the slideshows, please keep in mind that everything you see was created ENTIRELY through the skills and efforts of volunteers.  In addition, substantially all of the equipment and tooling in the shop has been acquired through generous donations from individuals and units within the NCAC Scouting community.  Please enjoy our slideshows and remember how much of a difference you can make!

Michael’s Woodshop is operated and maintained by a group of dedicated Volunteer Shop Stewards.  The Shop Stewards take great pride in the shop and are committed to providing high-quality program offerings to all NCAC youth.  We invite you to visit Michael’s Woodshop Webpage which has information about upcoming events, scheduling a unit activity, volunteering, our shop calendar, and more.

After: Michael’s Woodshop, December 2020

There are also many other ways to support Camp Snyder.  Individuals, small teams and large groups can participate in Service Days or schedule a Service Project.  If you have specialized skills or training, you can register these skills with the Camp Ranger to assist at camp as needs arise.

Please visit the Volunteering Webpage for information about how you can get involved.

Come out and enjoy Michael’s Woodshop at Camp William B. Snyder!

Michael’s Woodshop Welcomes New Youth Apprentices

November 23, 2020 by Barb Perez

Michael’s Woodshop at Camp William B. Snyder is pleased to welcome its first two Youth Apprentices to the Woodshop Team. Brian Staton and Alexander Alvarez have recently completed training with their assigned mentor and are looking forward to providing assistance to the volunteer Shop Stewards during upcoming events. In particular, Brian and Alexander will be providing assistance during our upcoming PWD Days events where they will guide and assist Cub Scouts and parents through the car building process. In addition, they will be assisting during other shop activities such as Den activities, merit badge classes, and Eagle Scout projects.

The Youth Apprentice Program was designed to provide youth who have an interest in woodworking with the opportunity to further develop their woodworking and leadership skills. Youth will be trained on the setup, operation, and maintenance of many shop tools. In addition, they will have opportunities during shop activities to lead and assist youth and adults during projects and other shop events. The Youth Apprentice Program is open to all BSA registered youth who are 14 years old or older.

Michael’s Woodshop is maintained and operated by our volunteer Shop Stewards, Shop Assistants and now of course, our Youth Apprentices! As shop use and shop offerings expand, we are always looking to add more BSA registered adult leaders to our ranks. In addition, as female youth membership within NCAC grows, an increasing number of female youth are participating in our shop activities. As such, we are specifically seeking to add female adult leaders to our Team. Please assist us in this effort by sharing this request with those who may be interested.
For more information about the Youth Apprentice Program and other volunteer positions, please see the Volunteering section of the Michael’s Woodshop webpage or email the volunteer shop steward team at MichaelsWoodshop.CWBS@gmail.com

Seeking Scoutmasters for Camp Snyder Merit Badge Week 2021

October 19, 2020 by Craig Weston

Scouters, we’re looking for adult leaders with Scoutmaster or Assistant Scoutmaster experience to fill 10 positions, to guide up to 100 provisional overnight camping and 50 day camper Scouts BSA during the Camp Snyder Merit Badge Week of July 18-24, 2021. This summer camp will be conducted with NCAC approved COVID-19 virus transmission precautions.

As a temporary Scoutmaster, you will monitor and guide small provisional groups of Scouts BSA during the day and/or overnight. We need male and female Scoutmasters for the expected male and female mix of Scouts BSA who will be participating. Oversight in monitoring compliance with the camps COVID-19 virus transmission precautions will be particularly important.

During the day there will be adult led Merit Badge classes. Outside of the classroom, Scoutmasters will need to oversee dining inside and outside of the Marriott Dining Hall, as well as the fun activities, like the swimming pool and night-time campfires. Overnight Scoutmasters will camp with their provisional units in the Camp Snyder campsites.

This is an opportunity for former or current Scoutmasters or Assistants with a flexible schedule to serve our youth in a time of need! We desire Scoutmasters who can spend part or all of the week during the day and overnight but will certainly welcome those that can only serve during the day or overnight to fill these 10 around-the-clock positions.

If you are interested, please contact Rick Ferry, rt.ferry72@gmail.com or Dave Seitz, dbseitz@gmail.com.

Plan to have FUN at the Webelos/Scout EXPO

September 30, 2020 by Craig Weston

There will be guaranteed FUN for Webelos and Scouts BSA who attend the November 20-22 Exposition at Camp Snyder! The FUN includes family camping, program activities lead by volunteers and self-guided activities each family can do on its own.

Climb the Scouterhorn, shoot an air rifle, try your hand at archery, fly or drive a drone, create your own leatherwork article, build a toolbox or birdhouse in the Woodshop, or “walk on water” at the STEM station. Plus, learn all about the 2021 Summer Camps at Camp Snyder and Goshen Scout Reservation. And, on your own, roast marsh mellows at your personal campfire, fish (they’re biting!), bike (bring yours and a helmet), try a Nature Scavenger Hunt or find trinkets while Geocaching. There is more to do than you have time!

Don’t delay in registering because space is limited. We are limiting the number of campers and using an appointment system for the program activities as part of our COVID-19 virus precautions. Learn about all the virus health precautions we are taking when you register at https://scoutingevent.com/082-2020SnyderFallFamilyCamping

See you at Camp Snyder this Fall!
