Cub-A-Day Program Week 12 (August 24-29)

August 24, 2020 by The Scouter Digest Staff

MONDAY

It’s Make Something Monday!
To start our last week of Cub-A-Day fun – We are going to get in touch with our artistic side again.

Draw or paint a picture, make a PowerPoint type slide, or create some other project that highlights your favorite part of the summer. Once it’s dry or ready – Take a photo and post it for everyone to see and then keep it safe in your memory box from Week 1.

Webelos can work on Art Explosion Requirement 3 with this project.

TUESDAY

It’s Taste Something Tuesday!
Hydration is key for everyone, especially Cubs Scouts on the go!

Water is the best way to be hydrated, but have you tried infusing water with different fruits?  Try it out with your favorite berry or citrus fruit.  How does it taste?  You can also use melons or cucumbers for a different flavor.

Here are some more ideas: https://www.tasteofhome.com/collection/infused-water-ideas/

WEDNESDAY

It’s Wander Around Wednesday!
If you haven’t yet – Ask a family member to download the “iNaturalist” app and then take a hike and “capture” 5 plants and/or animals you’re not familiar with.

Share with your den and/or pack about the new species you learned about.

If you are unable to download the app, take photos of the species and research online to identify them.

THURSDAY

It’s Do Something Thoughtful Thursday!
Leave a note here and tell our program staff what your FAVORITE Cub-A-Day activity was.  Make sure you put your best memories into your memory box!

FRIDAY

It’s Family Fun Friday!
Watch a movie as a family.  School gets going again soon, so get the last few bits of summer fun while you can!

SATURDAY

It’s Safety Saturday!
Each rank has different requirements for the Emergency Preparedness Award – Take a look at which requirements your family has completed, and what you have left to do.

Finish up any outstanding items and submit them to your den leader – You’ll be better ready for any emergencies that arise, and you can earn a cool pin to show off your new skills.

Cub-A-Day Program Week 11 (August 17-22)

August 16, 2020 by The Scouter Digest Staff

MONDAY

It’s Make Something Monday

Theaters are an important art venue and provide all sorts of entertainment.

This week we are going to make hand puppets – You can use a sock, a paper lunch bag, paint, markers, or any other materials you’d like (and the adults in your house approve) to design a puppet for your hand.

PS – You’ll need it later this week!

TUESDAY

It’s Taste Something Tuesday!
Fruits and vegetables are important for a balanced diet.  Dietitians agree the more color you have on your plate, the healthier the meal.
So today, put together a colorful lunch, using at least one “new to you” fruit or vegetable.  Post a photo of what you try and how it was!

WEDNESDAY

It’s Wander Around Wednesday!
Pick a town, county, or state park you have not been to.  Plan and take a hike/walk at that park.  Don’t forget your Cub Scout hiking essentials!!

THURSDAY

It’s Do Something Thoughtful Thursday!

Take some time and listen to a new style of music.

Did you enjoy it?  How did it make you feel?

Write down your thoughts and feelings and share this new music with your family, den, or pack.

Webelos – If you can find a live music broadcast, or a recording, you can satisfy Maestro Requirement 1(a).

FRIDAY

It’s Family Fun Friday!
Put on a puppet show with your sock puppets from Monday.  Share it with your den or extended family on Zoom or in person, if your unit is meeting together.
This can fulfill Tiger Theater Requirements 1 & 3, and Wolves Howling at the Moon Requirement 2.

SATURDAY

It’s Safety Saturday!

Talk with your family about what to do during severe weather in your area – We see thunderstorms with heavy rain, hail, and high winds during the summer and can get heavy snow and ice during the winter. What other types of serious weather can we get in the National Capital Area Council?

Cub-A-Day Week 8 (July 27-Aug 1)

July 27, 2020 by The Scouter Digest Staff

Week 8

MONDAY

Make Something Monday
Tyger Tyger, burning bright,
In the forests of the night;
What immortal hand or eye,
Could frame thy fearful symmetry?
“The Tyger” by William Blake

Symmetry is a quality of objects or images being made up of exactly similar parts facing each other or around an axis.

Rangoli is an art form, originating from the Indian subcontinent, in which patterns are created on the floor or the ground using materials such as colored rice, dry flour, colored sand, or flower petals.

Research photos of different Rangoli.  Find all the symmetries you can.  What happens if you look at it in a mirror?  Once you’ve seen a few designs – Use chalk, sand, or flour to make your own.

This activity completed Requirement 3b from the Fearful Symmetry NOVA Award if you talk to a NOVA counselor.

TUESDAY

It’s Taste Something Tuesday!
Foil Pack Dinners are another Scout staple – You can find recipes for any type of food online.

I like this one: https://www.food.com/recipe/boy-scout-foil-dinner-407428

WEDNESDAY

It’s Wander Around Wednesday!
Head outside at sunset and watch it with your family,  Once the stars come out – Try to identify 5 constellations and draw what you see.  An app like NightSky might help.

The sunset completes the third activity in the Explore My World Category of the Cub Family Summertime Passport: https://public.3.basecamp.com/p/AqAQD4gKhjdXw4m2AkDEbCWn

The 5 constellations fulfill Requirement 3a for the Out of this World NOVA, if you talk with a NOVA counselor about it.

THURSDAY

It’s Do Something Thoughtful Thursday!
Leave No Trace is a lifestyle that seeks to preserve our natural world for future generations.  Review the seven LNT Principles for Kids with your family.

You can use this video to learn the hand signs that go with each principle – It helps us remember the rules!  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4pp4aqwE0pQ

FRIDAY

It’s Family Fun Friday!
Puzzles present a challenge that the whole family can chip in to solve.  Find a fun puzzle and work on it together!

SATURDAY

It’s Safety Saturday!
Families are sometimes separated by emergencies – Having recent photos and bio-metric information ready to provide to public safety personnel is a HUGE help.

Create a child ID packet for each of the kids in your house – You can use school or family photos and a template like this: https://www.ready.gov/sites/default/files/NCMEC_Child_ID_Kit_wc_FEMA_508.pdf

You may even have an ID card from your School Photos.

Here are some https://www.freshoffthegrid.com/campfire-banana-boats/ (You can use an oven if a campfire isn’t an option)

Zoom CAD_W7.jpg

If you aren’t quite there yet – Start logging now and you’ll finish up in early September.

Get your ScoutStrong paperwork signed by an adult in your home and then sent to your Den Leader or Cubmaster.

Zoom CAD_R7.jpg

THURSDAY

It’s Do Something Thoughtful Thursday:
Thoughtful Thursday – The 1st and 2nd of August is NCACs Do A Good Turn Weekend.
To get ready – Work with your Den or Pack to find a local charity and see what you can do to give them a hand.

Check out the ideas here – https://weownadventure.com/good-turn-weekend-aug-1-2/

You could start a drive-through food drive, collect blankets or bags to donate, or help organize their facility.

For example: For our Scouts in the Alexandria area – Collecting paper grocery bags to help food pantries distribute supplies could help the Mother of Light Center in Del Ray.

Service projects can earn credit for the NCAC Scouting at Home Award: https://www.scoutingevent.com/082-scoutingathomeaward

Zoom CAD_F7.jpg

FRIDAY

It’s Family Fun Friday:
Family Fun Friday – Work together on a task the benefits the whole family – Some laundry or cleaning around the house maybe?  It might not sound fun now, but working together as a family is a great quality family time and it improves your home!

This also completes the first activity in the Explore My Family category of the Cub Family Summertime Passport: https://public.3.basecamp.com/p/AqAQD4gKhjdXw4m2AkDEbCWn

Zoom CAD_S7.jpg

SATURDAY

It’s Safety Saturday…
You can still work on the Protect Yourself Adventure if you haven’t finished it already…but this week we are going to start a new theme – Emergency Preparedness.

Pick any requirement from the Emergency Preparedness Award and work on it as a family- The requirements for each rank can be found here: https://www.scouting.org/awards/awards-central/emergency-preparedness/
