Cub Scouts

Is your scout going to be a rising Tiger, rising Wolf, rising Bear, or rising Webelos or Arrow of Light? Cub Scout camps all have an overarching theme. It’s Off to the Races at the District Day and Twilight camps. Find one near you! Or get ready for a mysterious week at Day Camp at Camp Snyder. The theme this year is ???. Ready for the next step up? Sign up for a short overnight camp at Camp Snyder’s Resident Weekends.

Are your rising Webelos and AOL dens looking for a weeklong adventure? Camp Ross is Goshen Scout Reservation’s dedicated overnight Webelos camp. The theme this summer is Sherlock Ross: The Case of the Disappearing Camps. Help the camp staff solve the case!

Scouts BSA

Is your scout bridging into a Scouts BSA Troop? There are plenty of options. Camps Bowman, Marriott, and Olmsted at Goshen Scout Reservation offer a variety of dining options, unique and favorite Merit Badges and activities, and exciting programs for new scouts, older scouts, and all the scouts in between. Finish out your summer with Camp Catoctin BSA’s expert Merit Badge counselors in mid-August.

Is your Scout not able to attend camp with their Troop? Are they looking for a second week? Check out our options for individual scouts: Goshen runs Provisional Camp each week and Camp Snyder has Scout Specialty Week with both overnight and day camp options.

Older Scouts, Venturers, & Sea Scouts

Need more adventure for older scouts, Venturers, and Sea Scouts? Sign your unit up for a backpacking trek or a river trek at Goshen’s Lenhok’sin High Adventure. Individuals can find adventure with a High Adventure Base Trip to a National or local High Adventure with a council contingent run by the NCAC High Adventure Committee. Order of the Arrow members should also make note of GOAT, the Goshen OA Trail Crew.

And of course, for those ages 14 and up who just cannot get enough summer camp, there is always the option to join summer camp staff!

There are so many options that all this is only a brief summary! View the 2023 NCAC Summer Camp Guide for details and pictures on all the possibilities for your summer. Get outdoors, have fun, and #adventureon!

Superhereos are STEM-powered at Mattaponi Cub Day Camp

June 19, 2022 by trisha

This year NCAC’s Cub Scout Day camp had the theme of Superheroes. Mattaponi District STEM Chair, Wendy Latella, designed a series of STEM stations all of which were right on theme!

In an action-packed week, Cub Scouts learned about density with Aquaman, properties of water with Superman/ Mr. Freeze, and  machines with Wonderwoman. For the culminating activity on Friday, all Cubs worked thru an escape room, themed around X-Men unite. The cubs had a blast as you can see from the photos!

Ms. Latella generously shared her STEM-action hero themed day camp plans below:

Monday (Aquaman / Water)

  • STEM – Water / Cool – Power of Water (Aquaman) – Sink or Float, water bottle tornado, water bottle diving character
  • Explore Superpower – Save Fred (gummy worm)
  • Make a SuperHero Float – (design a float for a ‘superhero’)

Tuesday (Superman vs Mr. Freeze / Lasters)

  • STEM – Water / Cool – Leak-proof bag
  • Explore Superpower – Laser eyes: Melt Ice to save Superheroes
  • Make – magnifying glass & solar power s’mores (s’more 2 ways!)

Wednesday (Wonderwoman / Flying Machine and Robin / Water Boat)

  • STEM – Water / Cool / Make – Rubberband-Powered Boat
  • Explore Superpower / Make – It’s a Bird, It’s a Plane, It’s a Superman
  • Paper Plane! (exploring shape & size in comparison to how paper planes fly, furthest flight, coolest trick

Thursday (Mr. Freeze / Frost / Cold)

  • STEM – Water / Cool and Explore Superpower – Make Frost in Can and explore a “Greek Tower”
  • Make – Plastic Bag Ice Cream / fruit slushies for kids with allergies

Friday (X-Men Unite / Escape Room)
STEM – ESCAPE ROOM

Aquia District Cub Scout Day Camp a Huge STEM Success!

July 14, 2021 by Mike Haas

Is it too early to start inspiring our future generation of scientists? Heck No! That’s what 50 Cub Scouts, boys and girls ranging in age from 6 – 10, discovered while having “Fun with a Purpose” exploring becoming scientists at the STEM-focused Aquia District Cub Scout Day Camp held at Pratt Park in Fredericksburg, from June 28 – July 2. The Founder of Scouting, Lord Baden-Powell said: “A week of camp life is worth six months of theoretical teaching in the meeting room.” And did this ever prove to be true – Everyone left already excited about coming back for next year’s Camp!

Director, Kristy Freeman, and Program Director, Jenna Cooper, led their all-volunteer Camp Staff of adults from Pack and Troop 26 and older Scouts from Troops 26 and 907, who kept these budding scientists busy all week with a variety of activities setup and run by the hard-working Camp Staff, including some pretty cool nature hikes. These included fun with model rockets, elephant toothpaste, bubble snakes, rock testing, lava lamps, leather work, robot hands, tie dye, marbles, exploding sticks, moon dough, slime, ooblick, learning about planets, yo-yos, puzzles and codes, as well as shooting archery, BB guns, and sling shots!

Scouts got to meet two of Stafford’s finest K9’s and their handlers, while Stafford Fire & Rescue stopped by to cool everyone down. Scouts also enjoyed singing some seriously silly songs with great gusto and much laughter!

All the Scouts grew from the experience and found it fun trying new things, working as a team and meeting new friends. They also learned about flexibility when weather threatened the fun – but the Staff made sure it was about K.I.S.M.I.F. (Keeping it Safe, Making it Fun!)

Kristy and Jenna had an amazing adult Camp Staff: Susan Wood, Hallie Graves, Joe Fijalkowski, Kari Hammond, Xander Korb, and Jennifer Bell. But the Staffers who truly made it the best week ever were teen Scouts BSA volunteers, Michael, Maddie, Jackson, and Nathan (aka Ranger Rick). Everyone is already looking forward to next summer!
