Superhereos are STEM-powered at Mattaponi Cub Day Camp

June 19, 2022 by trisha

This year NCAC’s Cub Scout Day camp had the theme of Superheroes. Mattaponi District STEM Chair, Wendy Latella, designed a series of STEM stations all of which were right on theme!

In an action-packed week, Cub Scouts learned about density with Aquaman, properties of water with Superman/ Mr. Freeze, and  machines with Wonderwoman. For the culminating activity on Friday, all Cubs worked thru an escape room, themed around X-Men unite. The cubs had a blast as you can see from the photos!

Ms. Latella generously shared her STEM-action hero themed day camp plans below:

Monday (Aquaman / Water)

  • STEM – Water / Cool – Power of Water (Aquaman) – Sink or Float, water bottle tornado, water bottle diving character
  • Explore Superpower – Save Fred (gummy worm)
  • Make a SuperHero Float – (design a float for a ‘superhero’)

Tuesday (Superman vs Mr. Freeze / Lasters)

  • STEM – Water / Cool – Leak-proof bag
  • Explore Superpower – Laser eyes: Melt Ice to save Superheroes
  • Make – magnifying glass & solar power s’mores (s’more 2 ways!)

Wednesday (Wonderwoman / Flying Machine and Robin / Water Boat)

  • STEM – Water / Cool / Make – Rubberband-Powered Boat
  • Explore Superpower / Make – It’s a Bird, It’s a Plane, It’s a Superman
  • Paper Plane! (exploring shape & size in comparison to how paper planes fly, furthest flight, coolest trick

Thursday (Mr. Freeze / Frost / Cold)

  • STEM – Water / Cool and Explore Superpower – Make Frost in Can and explore a “Greek Tower”
  • Make – Plastic Bag Ice Cream / fruit slushies for kids with allergies

Friday (X-Men Unite / Escape Room)
STEM – ESCAPE ROOM

June 19, 2022 by Matthew Rusten

Coming this fall to Camp William B. Snyder is Camping Palooza, a day event celebrating scouting in NCAC by showcasing aspects from all areas of scouting. Including activities from STEM, Scouting History, food, music, games, and more, Camping Palooza will be hosted by the Amangamek-Wipit Lodge and will be open to all ages of scouts and scouters. Some hints of what’s to come include nature, handicrafts, a marching band, special guests, and to end the day, a closing show sure to wow and excite. This jamboree of sorts will be taking place on October 15 2022, and our team can not wait to see you there!

Camping Palooza not only provides exciting activities, but also opportunities to network and meet other scouts. Camping Palooza is open to everyone! From Cub Scouts to Eagles, Sea Scouts, Venture Crews, all branches and ages of scouting are welcome at this event. With as many activities as we have planned, there is sure to be something for everyone!

We are still thinking up tons of thrilling program activities that are sure to excite everyone from the youngest Lion Scout to the most experienced adults, so if you have an idea for an awesome activity, or if you would like to join the event staff and lend your assistance for the day, let us know at campingpalooza@wipit470.org.

Camp Snyder Summer Merit Badges Sign- Up is OPEN!

April 5, 2022 by Craig Weston

Hey Scouts, you can now choose and sign up for merit badges to be taught during the Scouts BSA Specialty Week, July 17 – 23 at Camp Snyder!

You can pick from over 50 merit badges, including Eagle-required, aquatics, shooting sports, scout skills, the outdoors, STEM and many more. And, it’s not often that you can take NEAT merit badges like Archaeology, Game Design, Moviemaking, Nuclear Science, Photography, Radio, Robotics and Woodwork. As an added benefit, most merit badges will be taught by adult volunteers who are experts in their field.

For new Scouts, you can learn skills for rank advancement in the Green Bar Bill Patrol program. This first-year camper program, named for legendary BSA pioneer William “Green Bar Bill” Hillcourt, uses the patrol method to learn the traditional outdoor skills Scouts need to earn Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First-Class Scout ranks. In additional to rank requirements, Scouts will also earn the Totin’ Chip and Firem’m Chit qualifications, as well as First Aid and Pioneering merit badges. Overnight camping Scouts will also have an opportunity to earn Swimming merit badge if they choose. WOW! Rank advancement skills AND merit badges all in one program!

Plus, ALL Scouts can join in the other FUN camp activities at the swimming pool, rifle and archery ranges, boating lake, climbing tower, campfires and much more. After all, it is summer camp!

Scouts can participate as day-campers, unit overnight campers or as individual overnight campers in provisional units with volunteer adult Scoutmasters.

Hurry to register for camp before Early Bird Pricing EXPIRES on April 16th, at www.gotosnyder.org/summer-camp/specialty-week/

If you are already registered, just put in your registration number to choose and sign up for merit badges.
