National Jamboree Postponement FAQ

General

Q. Why has the 2021 National Jamboree been postponed?
A. The safety of Scouts, volunteers, staff members and communities is at the forefront of every decision the BSA makes. The COVID-19 pandemic continues to have wide-ranging implications for events across the country, and the Jamboree is no exception. Planning, preparations, and decisions regarding National Jamborees take place months, and even years, in advance. Given the current situation and the uncertain nature of future conditions, we determined we could not prepare in a manner that would provide the safest possible environment for all those involved. We look forward to holding this incredible event at a future date.

Q. When will the next National Jamboree be held?
A. A Jamboree task force of volunteers and staff, appointed by national Boy Scouts of America leadership, will recommend a new date for this event. We will inform all currently registered participants once that date is selected.

Refunds and travel plans

Q. I am a registered youth participant or the parent of a youth participant; how will I receive my refund?
A. Council contingent members should work directly with their local council regarding refunds.

Q. I am a registered Jamboree Service Team member; how will I receive my refund?
A. The Jamboree Department at the National Service Center will process refunds.

Q. I am a Jamboree Service Team member and have already booked my flight, what should I do?
A. Jamboree Service Team members should work directly with their airline to inquire about refunds or flight credits.

Other High Adventure opportunities

Q. Will the Summit have other high adventure programs next year?

A. At this time, the Summit Bechtel Reserve is taking reservations for 2021 Summit Adventure programming with councils and Jamboree contingents. BSA High Adventure Base programs, including those offered at the Summit, can be found at

Q. Can my unit still attend the S ummit as part of the James C. Justice National Scout Camp in the summer of 2021?
A. Yes, you can review options for an adventure at the Summit here:

Q. What other adventure opportunities will be available next year?
A. Council camps offer incredible opportunities for adventure of all kinds and levels. While some may not be open now, be sure to consider your local council camp when planning for next year.

Q. I am a participant who applied for a scholarship to attend the Jamboree, will I need to apply again when the Jamboree is rescheduled?
A. Yes. Unfortunately, you will need to apply again given that the situation, available funds, and allocation process may be different.

Q. If I have already accepted a staff assignment, what happens to my position?
A. The BSA will inform key stakeholder groups of plans and decisions regarding positions for a future Jamboree as soon as that information is available.

Q. Can I still buy 2021 National Jamboree merchandise and apparel?
A. No. Official BSA 2021 National Jamboree merchandise and apparel are no longer available.

Q. My council is planning a pre-Jamboree trip for a few days before the Jamboree (Ex: Washington, D.C.), is that still going to happen? Will we still get the local contingent merchandise we ordered?
A. Council contingent members should work directly with their local council to inquire about pre-Jamboree trips and locally ordered merchandise.

Q. I am a youth participant but may be over 18 for the new National Jamboree date, can I still go as a participant?
A. Yes. There will be opportunities to attend a future Jamboree within the participant structure and the Jamboree Service Team structure.

Q. Where is the best place to go for the latest information?
A. As new information becomes available, we will include it on the 2021 National Jamboree Website at www.jamboree.scouting.org.

Q. What if I have questions that aren’t answered here?

A. Some details are not available yet. However, we will do our best to answer your question if you send an email to ​2021Jamboree@scouting.org​.

National Scout Jamboree Q & A

National Scout Jamboree FAQs:

1. When and where is the 2021 National Scout Jamboree?
The NSJ is July 21-30, 2021, and Summit Bechtel Scout Reservation in West Virginia

2. How many units is the NCAC sending to Jamboree?
The NCAC has committed to sending 10 Contingent Units: 2 Venture Crews, 1 Girl Troop, 7 Boy Troops.

3. Is there an age limit?
Youth participants for a Troop must be at least 12 years old (or 11 and completed 6th grade). Crew participants must be at least 14. There is no rank requirement, though it is recommended to be at least a First Class Scout or equivalent.

4. Will all of my Scouts be together in the same unit?
There is a limit of 8 Scouts from a home unit assigned to a contingent unit. If a unit sends 10 Scouts they should expect to be in two different contingent units. NCAC units typically camp in the same general area and though they may have different schedules for some activities, Scouts will still have plenty of time to see friends in our units and do things with them during the Jamboree.

5. Will my adult leaders be with my Scouts in the same unit?
This depends on the number of adults selected from your home unit. Each contingent unit has a Scoutmaster and three Assistant Scoutmasters. The ASM3 position is reserved for a young adult (18-21 yo). Adults (including Young Adults) must register through the National website then submit an Adult Leader Survey to Eric Smith (eric.smith@scouting.org). All Adult candidates are interviewed prior to being selected to lead a Contingent Unit in the NCAC. Adult leaders will be selected in July 2020.

6. How much does it cost?
The NCAC Contingent cost for Jamboree is estimated to be $1,500 per participant. This cost includes the Jamboree, round trip transportation to Summit Bechtel Reserve, a duffle bag, patches, and some other items. Participants should plan to pay $200 per person at registration. There will be a payment schedule spread over the next eight months.

7. I can’t afford $1,500, but I want to attend the Jamboree. Are Camperships available?
YES! Youth are eligible for Camperships that can cover up to 50% of the cost of Jamboree. Those wanting to apply for a Campership will need to submit an application. Campership details will be available on the NCAC website by July 1.

8. I’ve been to Jamboree as a participant in the past. What if I want to be on Staff at Jamboree?
Those wishing to serve on Staff must apply on the National site through the Service Team link. Staff are selected by National. Anyone going to Jamboree will need to provide their own transportation. Staff are typically expected to arrive at SBR early and stay an extra day to set up and clean up. Staff dates are July 17-31, 2021.

9. I’m in the Order of the Arrow. What is Operation Arrow?
Operation Arrow is a Service Team made up of Arrowmen from around the country. You must be at least 16 to participate in Operation Arrow. Arrowmen wanting to participate in Operation Arrow should register as Staff through the National site. Cost for Operation Arrow is $450 (16-25yo) and $895 (25+). 10. Where can I get more information?
Information is posted at least once a month on the WeOwnAdventure website and in the digital issue of Scouter’s Digest. There is also some information on the NCAC website. And, of course, the National Site.

11. Will someone come talk to my unit about Jamboree?
Yes! All you need to do is ask. We can talk to your unit, in-person or virtually, about Jamboree. We have a team of youth and adult Ambassadors ready to help spread the word.

12. Is there any promotional material I can share?

Young Adult Leaders Needed for Jamboree

Scouting’s flagship event is a gathering of thousands of Scouts and Scouters that showcases everything that is great about the Boy Scouts of America. Over the course of 10 days, once every four years, the Boy Scouts of America gathers together. Scouts and Scouters who attend will participate in many adventures—stadium shows, pioneer village, hikes, sports and more! With 10,000 acres at the Summit to explore, there’s no shortage of opportunities to build Scouting memories.

National Capitol Area Council is looking for ASM3. This contingent Troop position is filled by men and women age 18-21. This unique position is for young adults who are able to serve as a liaison between the older adult leaders and the youth participants.

  • NCAC Contingent cost is estimated at $1,500pp. The national fee of $1,175 set by Jamboree Administration covers the expense of program materials, food, insurance, and equipment, as well as the use of a tent, cot, dining shelters, stoves, fuel, and cooking utensils. Additional Council fees cover transportation, bags, patches, and other fees.

YOUNG ADULT LEADERSHIP (ASM3 position):
Young adults wanting to be part of the NCAC Contingent need to submit their applications to Eric Smith (eric.smith@scouting.org) no later than June 1, 2020. All adult applications must be approved by the Council and applicants will be required to participant in an interview prior to being selected as part of the Council Contingent. One young adult will be selected for each of the 10 units sent by the Council.

SEEKING:

  • Scouts BSA: At least 12 years of age (or age 11 and have graduated 6th grade) by the first day of the Jamboree, and may not reach their 18th birthday by the last day of the Jamboree
  • Crew Member: Graduated the 8th grade or be at least 14 years of age by the first day of the Jamboree, but not have reached their 21st birthday by the last day of the Jamboree.
  • Adults: who are willing to apply to serve as unit leadership

HOW MUCH:

  • $1,500* per Scout or Crew Member ($200 due to complete registration)
