Biography:
Dr. William W. Bowerman has been awarded the Hornaday Gold Award, one of the rarest awards in Scouting, and is awarded for distinguished and unusual service to natural resource conservation and environmental improvement over a sustained period (at least 20 years). Dr. Bowerman has over 35 years of work on conservation of bald eagles and other birds of prey on five continents. He served for 18 years on the International Joint Commission, Great Lakes Science Advisory Board, including 3 years as United States Co-Chair. Bowerman’s Scouting achievements include Eagle Scout, Vigil Honor, NESA Outstanding Eagle Scout Award, and Silver Beaver Award. He has served as an adult leader in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, including service at the District and Council levels, currently NCAC’s Vice President of Outdoor Adventure. He is a National Fellow of The Explorers Club. Dr. William W. Bowerman, is a Professor and Department Chair of Environmental Science & Technology, University of Maryland.

Pack 1859’s Journey to Earn the NCAC Outdoor Ethics Awareness Award

Cubs in Pack 1859 from Sully District are earning the NCAC Outdoor Ethics Awareness award for Cubs. Before the recommendations to suspend all in-person Scouting events, they dedicated their last pack meeting to Outdoor Ethics and Leave No Trace!

The NCAC Outdoor Ethics Awareness Award has 4 requirements.
1. Cubs and Scouters recited the Outdoor Code together as a pack. The Outdoor Code captures the essence of the Scouting Outdoor Ethic and establishes our aspirations and commitment.

2. They viewed the Leave No Trace video, produced by the National Park Service and the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics. This video introduces the 7 principles of Leave No Trace.

3. Cubs and Scouters learned some of the principles by playing interactive games with a person who has taken the Outdoor Ethics Orientation, the Leave No Trace Trainer course, or the Leave No Trace Master Educator course. They played the trash timeline, the durable surface game, a wildlife habitat matching game, the animal vault game, and the thumb trick.

4. At home with an adult they will take the Leave No Trace online awareness course. This online course can be tricky, even for adults, so do your best.

Fred Schaufeld Named 2019 Loudoun Good Scout Award Honoree

Fred Schaufeld, Managing Director of SWaN & Legend Venture Partners, and a dedicated community volunteer, has been named the 2019 Loudon County Good Scout Award Honoree by National Capital Area Council, Boy Scouts of America. The award was presented at a community event on Wednesday, October 16, 2019, at The Stone Tower Winery. 

The Good Scout Award, presented each year in Loudoun County since 1998, recognizes individuals who have rendered outstanding service to the community. Former honorees include Sharon Virts, Michael Huber, The Honorable J. Randall Minchew, Dr. Edgar Hatrick, III, Jeff Browning, Scott Hamberger, Kristina Bouweiri, John B. Wood, Mark Stavish, Ed.D., Bill Dean, The Honorable William C. Mims, J. Hamilton Lambert, Rodney N. Huebbers, Leonard S. “Hobie” Mitchel, The Honorable Bob Sevila, Aryln Black, Jock Phumphrey, The Honorable Joe May, Joe Bolling and The Honorable George Atwell. 

“Fred Schaufeld demonstrates extraordinary integrity, character and civic mindedness,” said William Langhorne, event chair for the 2019 Loudoun County Good Scout Evening. “He is an exceptional role model for today’s Scouts and outstanding example of the good works, values and service that the Award is designed to honor.”

Fred Schaufeld grew up in Westbury, New York. He attended Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. He started his first company, NEW Asurion, while in law school; it has since grown to employ over 16,000 people and is the largest consumer product protection company in the world.

Today, Mr. Schaufeld is co-founder and managing director of SWaN& Legend Venture Partners, a private equity firm. He is also a partner in Monumental Sports and Entertainment. Mr. Schaufeld sits on the boards of The Noodle Companies, CustomInk, Framebridge, KIND Healthy Snacks, Quad Learning and José Andrés’ ThinkFood Group. Mr. Schaufeld is also an advisor to the boards of Cava Group, UrbanStems and DuraTap.

He is a recipient of Ernst & Young’s “Entrepreneur of the Year” award and is a member of the Economic Club of Washington, DC, and the Young President’s Organization. Mr. Schaufeld has been quoted extensively in numerous publications and has appeared on CNN and NPR. He and his wife, Karen, reside outside of Washington DC, and are active in organizations dedicated to early childhood development, education, literacy, peace, the environment, and the arts.

He sits on the boards of Fight for Children and the Wolf Trap Foundation and is also a member of Venture Philanthropy Partners. He is also an active supporter of the Schaufeld Family Heart Center of the Inova Loudoun Hospital, the Fredrick D. and Karen G. Schaufeld Lower School of Loudoun County Day School, VA and the Fredrick D. Schaufeld Scholarship Program in Westbury, NY.

The awards ceremony on October 16 brought together civic-minded individuals and business leaders from throughout the DMV community in an event that recognizes and celebrates the importance of Scouting in guiding and developing today’s youth.

    Alexandria Eagle Scout Wins Scholarship

    Joseph Lepak, from Alexandria, VA, a member of Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall Catholic Community, Archdioceses for the Military Services, USA is one of seven recipients of a service scholarship awarded in 2019 by the National Catholic Committee on Scouting (NCCS) through the Emmett J. Doerr Memorial Scout Scholarship Fund.

    Joseph received a $2,000 scholarship. As a military kid, Joseph moved around a lot but the two things that were consistent in his life were Catholic chapels on military posts and Scouts, so they both became very important to him. He says, “as a result of my faith and upbringing, I also have an extreme desire to serve others…It is very important to me that my legacy and my accomplishments in work, affect others for the better. I want the people of this country-and the world-to be better off due to my actions.”

    After his dad retired, Joseph was able to stay in Northern Virginia throughout his high school years. He has held numerous leadership positions in Scouting including Senior Patrol Leader, Order of the Arrow (OA) Vice Chief of Finances, Ordeal Master and Area Chief, leading almost 1,000 Scouts in five chapters (Order of the Arrow is Scouting’s National Honor Society). Joseph has also STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) activity leader, secretary, and president of his Venturing Crew.

    Joseph is currently Junior Assistant Scout Master of Troop 129 in Alexandria, VA. His Eagle Scout Project involved designing and constructing a new tool shed and improving the gardens for a middle school. He has been a participant in the 2015 World Scout Jamboree and the Inter-American Scout Jamboree in Ecuador. With his Venturing Crew he attended the National Jamboree in West Virginia, Sea Base Bahamas, and Northern Tier High Adventure. Joseph received several awards including the Dr. Bernard Harris Bronze Supernova Award, designed to introduce and encourage further study of STEM.

    Through his archdiocese, Joseph has earned all four of the religious awards and has served as an altar server, lector, teen leader for vacation Bible School, assisted with clothing and food drives and with the Adult Education Program.

    Always wanting to serve, Joseph has worked with many community organizations, including Wreaths Across America, Alexandrians Living Ecumenically, helping to set up and distribute food to low-income families, Scouting for Food, Park Clean-Up, National Cherry Blossom Festival, Meals on Wheels and Metavivor, a cancer survivor fundraiser swim-a-thon.

    Academically, Joseph was selected for admission to T.C. Williams STEM Academy and to participate in their Cyber Security Camp. He has received numerous academic awards and represented his school through his science research. He has been active in “The High School Project Plan”, which aims to resolve issues around growing student enrollment and space at his high school. He also recently joined Community for Renewable Energy (CURE). Their mission is to train school staff and inform students about creating eco-friendly and environmentally sustainable schools. Joseph has been accepted at George Mason University and is interested in studying political science.

    To be eligible to apply for the Emmett J. Doerr Memorial Scout Scholarship, the Scout must be Catholic, earned the Ad Altare Dei and/ or Pope Pius XII Awards, and received the Eagle Scout, Summit, or Quartermaster Award.     Pack 961 Earns the Hornaday Award

    It all began a year ago, but I missed the beginning. On Saturday, March 23, 2019 my Pack 961 went to Sleeter Lake Park and picked up sticks and planted trees.

    We also had our photo taken with the MAYOR! During our Cub Scout event we went to the lake for a conservation program.

    Also to work on the pollinator garden Pack 961 installed in April 2018.

    The reason we planted tress was to make it look beautiful and support lots of ecosystems.

    Also to help the environment.

    Ashburn Troop 997 Earns Hornaday Award

    Recently we shared a story about an Eagle project Tapp Rhoads was leading, and Troop 997’s efforts to help Tapp achieve his goals. The project was to install and maintain a series of Mallard Nesting Tubes around the local community. After the project was completed, Hornaday Advisor Sara Holtz reviewed it and found it met the criteria of both significant scope and sustainable impact. Since over 75% of Troop 997 Scouts participated in the project, we learned last week that the Troop had earned the prestigious Hornaday Unit Award for its efforts.

    The National Capital Area Council (NCAC) Hornaday Committee recently created a patch for Scouts participating in a Hornaday Unit Award project, honoring the legacy of William Hornaday and his work with the Smithsonian Institution and his efforts to save the American Bison from extinction. Scouts BSA Troop 997 is the first Troop to earn this newly designed award patch.
